12 Honest Job Search Facts About Your Job Search, From a Recruiter Who Does not Beat Around the Bush

"I'm a recruiter."

Try dropping these three words at a cocktail party and you're guaranteed at least one response-if not several-of, "I hate recruiters." Needless to say, I knew I had hit a career high point to merit that kind of reaction. (Hey, at least I did not have to explain what I did for a living!)

It's true, headhunting may not win any popularity contest, but I learned so much about how the process actually works. In fact, I decided to embrace the harsh truths I uncoated and share them with job seekers. So, take a page from the other team's playbook: Here's what everyone needs to know when it comes to applying for jobs.

1. Your Resume's Pretty Boring

Let's be honest: Resumes are quite possibly the driest reading material in the world. Now, imagine opening your inbox every day to hundreds of these documents. No amount of glitz or glamour is going to turn a resume into The Girl on the Train.

Lesson

When dealing with recruiters do not spend hours discussing the perfect color or font. Instead, make sure you're standing out for the right reasons, by making it relevant and easy to skim.

2. Your Resume Will not Be Read in Full

I'll be the first to admit that I never read a candidate's resume word for word. It's impossible in a profession where time is of the essence.

Lesson

Only serve up your most relevant information and ax anything you're throwing in just to even out the bullet display. Oh, for anyone still considering a two-page resume-this is exactly why it's not worth it.

3. Recruiters Do not Want to Read Your Cover Letter

You know that hiring managers generally want you to demonstrate your talents, qualifications, and writing skills in a cover letter. But recruiters are all about that resume. (Confession: I rarely read cover letters in full.)

Lesson

Grab the person's attention fast with an eye-catching opening line. Just like how resumes bore us, cover letters do too. So make us smile-it'll go a long way.

4. However, They'll Notice a Bad One

Yes, I just said we do not want to read cover letters (and therefore mostly skim). But we'll notice if you send a generic one addressed to "To Whom it May Concern."

Lesson

Take the time to tailor your cover letter. Even if it's not being read, the person skimming it wants to see that you put effort into it.

5. Like You, We're Busy

Unfortunately, it's impossible for us to get back to every single person who asks for help. Especially if you're asking a question that's not in our wheelhouse or involves a lot of research on our end, such as "What open positions in your company should I apply to?"

Lesson

Make sure you're not only reaching out to the right person, but also that you're asking concise questions that are easy for us to answer fast.

6. You Should Be Able to (Succinctly) Sum Up Your Qualifications

So many candidates confuse "Tell me about yourself" with an opportunity to run through their resume bullet point by bullet point. We're only human and we'll ever lose interest and miss out on your most impressive points.

Lesson

Instead, spend time working on your elevator pitch. Make sure to point out the highlights, transitions, number of direct reports, ROI, organizational contributions, and responsibilities that are relevant to the position you want.

7. Recruiters Know Your Real Age

Heck, we can piece together a lot more than that with a resume and some basic research.

Lesson

Do not leave dates off your resume or try to make it sound like you have way more experience than you do.

8. We Get to the Bottom of Everything

Fleshing out the good, the bad, and the ugly is a recruiter's job-and the seasoned recruiter can smell something funny a mile away.

Lesson

You're best bet is to be honest when it comes to salary history, employment gaps, and any hidden details that may come out later. We're on your side and wants to see you succeed-so being honest will only help us help you.

9. A Call Does not (Necessarily) Mean It's an Official Interview

Sometimes a phone conversation is necessary to make sense of someone on paper before we bring him or her in to speak to the team.

Lesson

This is where your short, sweet, and concise elevator pitch comes in gently again. Know your value, know your worth, and be prepared to win someone over in a short amount of time. Oh, and if you're not super-comfortable on the phone, brush up on your skills.

10. We Laugh at Inappropriate Interviewed Photos

When you spend every day scanning LinkedIn profiles you can bet you come across some interesting pictures. It's not that recruiters are malicious-but we are human!

Lesson

Avoid being too serious (this is not a mugshot), ditch the multi-person photo, and go with something professional. If you need help, here are some tips for taking a professional headshot for free.

11. We Do not Want You to Call Us

You're eager to hear if the recruiter is interested-and that's OK, we've all been there. But remember, if we want to interview you, we'll get in touch.

Lesson

You will not change our mind by picking up the phone. So do not call anyway and risk annoying someone on the brink of bringing you in. If you absolutely must follow up on any part of the process, use email.

12. We're Not Heartless

All of these insider secrets may make you want to swear off recruiters alike-after all, if I read this, I'd feel pretty disheartened, too. But before you do that, keep this final lesson in mind.

Lesson

Right or wrong, responsive or not, recruiters play an important role in helping find the right candidates for the companies they serve. While you do not have to take what I'm saying as a gospel, take it into consideration as you're looking for a new job-especially if you are having trouble landing interviews.

And remember, these are just tips. You're a hard worker and (I'll assume) awesome at your job. So know that that alone will get you far in your job search and in your career.

Autistic People and Employment

People with autism spectrum disorder need jobs to live independently. But sadly, the respect of finding gainful employment is quite bleak for them. There’s a lack of research on employment rates for autistic adults across the globe. But conservative estimates suggest that more than 80% of autistic people don’t work. In Britain, only 12% of high-functioning autistic adults find full-time employment. Those with a more challenging form of autism, only 2% are able to land jobs.

Psychotherapy, life skills and job training can go a long way. A recent study in the US found that at least 87% of autistic youths who were assisted to land a job, could get one. On the other hand, only 6% of those who didn’t get a support were successful.

Assistance, in most countries, is terminated when an autistic individual ends full-time education. Esteban Maxis, a 25-year old NGO worker having Asperger’s syndrome, describes leaving school as “jumping off the cliff.” He’s no longer entitled to the social coaching that he used to get along with English and Mathematics classes. It’s difficult to judge the number of autistic adults who are actually capable to work. Nearly half of those affected with the disorder usually have above average intelligence. They often use “What’s the Expression” and “Make Sentences” apps to help in their communication. But the level of intelligence is no indicator to an autistic person’s employability. He/she may score high in IQ tests but suffer from anxiety and can’t go far from home.

Contrary to popular belief, most people with autism spectrum disorder are willing to work. But high-functioning autistic adults have a much better chance to land a job than those who are severely affected.

The job interview is the first major hurdle. Most autistic persons struggle with social conventions like maintaining eye contact while speaking. While the “What’s the Expression” and “Make Sentences” apps may help to a great extent, it’s the application of the mind at that point of time which matters most. Serena Gomez, who works with an animal rescue organization, recalls that in her first few interviews she didn’t know when to shake hands with the interviewer. She often prepares a script before meeting new people in an official environment.

Also, most autistic individuals speak bluntly. Team meetings don’t work for them. Autistic people usually have a single-minded pursuit. They want to focus the job at hand rather than discussing about the next weekend outing. This makes things difficult for people with autism who can’t indulge in friendly banter.

Work Life Balance – A Coaching Perspective

“The secret to work-life balance is to have no life” is the advice Wally gives to a colleague in the comic strip Dilbert. And as ridiculous as that might sound, we all have had a boss, who if they did not say it, thought it. Maybe there have been times when you contemplated the notion?

In a recent Harvard Business Review survey of over 4,000 executives most participants, male and female, agreed they couldn’t compete at a high level if they lived a life with the classic idea of work life balance. Rather, they believed focus, on either work or home, at any given time, was more effective. In reality work got most of their weeks’ time. No wonder the US ranks 28th out of 36 developed nations in getting these two aspects to balance.

I don’t pretend to have the answers, nor do I claim to have achieved total success in this category but I have given it thought, done some research, and attempted to practice some of my findings.

Here are a few work life balance tips from an executive coach.

For a number of years I have attempted to live what I call a “blended life.” Taking into account the life phase I was in – my career building and wealth accumulation years, vs. my family first times, vs. my “How about me?” moments and so on, I would mix all the elements together to create the life I wanted. I’ve always had a career (more than one actually) and have almost always been in a committed relationship. Both are very important to me, so they are forever in my blend.

The question I always had to ask, “What are the proportions?” If I wasn’t vigilantly mindful of risk, one would always dominate the other and I would feel guilty in both locations. So, as I commute home, I intentionally focus on what I want my mindset and behavior to be when I enter that apartment and I monitor myself so as not to be distracted by the sound of another arriving e-mail (I turn off the alert) and do just the same (alert on) as I travel to the office. I always remove my work clothes as soon as I get home and I never wear casual clothes to work. It sets a tone – this is where you are and this is what you need to do – limit the conflict. Some of my friends come from my work world, most don’t. I rarely talk shop outside of the office, yet I am forever curious about the talents and choices of others. The ingredients of this blend are distinctive yet compatible. When I step back, I see both aspects, but where the moment’s focus is would never be in question.

I am also very comfortable living with a certain amount of conscious imbalance. Earlier in my career, when I travelled extensively for business, I knew home and I were getting the short end of the stick even though I tried hard to make the most of every off work hour. My husband and I had dates, I had “no fly” days on my calendar, we even had a television commitment where we’d choose one weekday program per week and enjoyed it together, religiously – even if I was lying in my hotel bed and he was home on our sofa, each of us with a phone to our ear. Sometimes we’d have a weekday, Jane’s on the road, dinner – both of us ordering in – me from room service, he from whatever takeout place struck his fancy. We’d have our normal dinner conversations just miles apart. The point is I knew this was not the ideal but it was conscious compensation for being apart. It also had restrictions and a time limit. (I ultimately quit that job and switched careers to one with zero travel.) We had many a laugh about those days and fondly remembered how strange it appeared to others who had never tried our version of together time.

I prescribe to what the psychoanalyst, DW Winnicott, called the “good enough mother.” The mother who wants the best for her child but admits she is flawed as a parent, makes mistakes, and rather than despair, tries again and again, mostly loving, sometimes hating, the child and herself. I expanded it but in a much less elegant way. I decided to be the good enough wife, child, parent, worker, friend, neighbor, executive coach, citizen, and all the other roles I play. I admit, I can’t be all things to anyone, nor do I want to be. I try hard to do my best but not give my all. I often don’t succeed and generally need to get something from it to make me content and fulfilled. I regularly ask, “How does this fit?” into my vision of a well-lived, complete and rewarding life.

Is a balanced life a zero sum game? I hope not. Can the attempts to have it all produce overwhelm, make you feel depleted or torn? Sure, at times. On the other hand is there the possibility that home can be the enhancer of work and the office the enhancer of home? This I am quite sure. It takes focus, commitment, restrictions, and most of all practice. It also requires an ability to say “no,” a sense of dedication and wonderment, and a willingness to walk away when the people and things that mean the most to you are threatened. The big winner in all of this is not your company, your family, or your friends – it’s you.

Is At-Will Employment A Myth?

California law provides for at-will employment unless there is an agreement to the contrary. As a result, an employer may believe it is free to terminate an employee at any time and for any reason or no reason.

The reality is far more complicated. A variety of limitations and exceptions to at-will employment have built up over time. An employer who decides to fire a worker should not have a false sense of security that the at-will doctrine will protect it against a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Implied Agreement

At-will employment can be negated by an implied agreement to not discharge an employee without good cause. Written or verbal representations by the employer of continued employment, other statements by the employer that create an expectation of job security, or the establishment of a progressive disciplinary policy can create such an implied agreement.

Discrimination

An employer may not dismiss an employee because of his or her race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. Because the protected characteristics are so numerous, one or more of them are likely to apply to most employees. Thus, an employee frequently will be in a position to at least claim that a termination is based on illegal discrimination.

Public Policy

An employer may not dismiss an employee in violation of a fundamental and substantial public policy. Such cases generally involve terminations based on an employee:

  • Refusing to break the law at the request of the employer;
  • Performing a legal obligation;
  • Exercising a constitutional or statutory right or privilege (e.g., seeking a reasonable accommodation for a disability; taking lawful medical, pregnancy, or family leave; filing a workers’ compensation claim); or
  • Complaining about or reporting a legal violation (e.g., employment discrimination, sexual or racial harassment, wage or overtime violations, workplace safety violations).

Burden of Proof

The at-will doctrine is further undermined by how the burden of proof is allocated in wrongful termination lawsuits. The employee has the initial burden of establishing that (1) he or she is in a class protected by the “discrimination” or “public policy” principles discussed above, and (2) there is some causal connection between his or her protected status and the employment termination (e.g., the termination occurred shortly after the employee filed a workers’ compensation claim or complained about employment law violations). If the employee satisfies that burden, then the burden shifts to the employer to put forward a legitimate nondiscriminatory reason for the termination.

In light of these limitations, “at-will employment” often may be more a myth than a reality. An employer therefore must follow carefully designed employment practices to lessen the risk that it will be successfully sued by a terminated employee.
