Managing Emotions During Career Change and Job Search, Part One

How can you manage your emotions during your career change or job search? To answer this practical and wise question, let's first define what emotions are. Emotions, also commonly referred to as feelings, are energy released in your body in response to perceives events, that is, to data received via your five senses.

To build your skill in managing your emotions during your current or next career transition:

1.) Practice Naming Your Emotions. There's great power in simply naming your emotions as you experience them. Check in with yourself several times a day and name your emotions in a journal or log. Learn to identify the nuances of difference between emotions that are similar. Choose carefully how you name what you're feeling: word choice creates reality!

2.) Allow Yourself to Feel What You Feel. Resisting emotions keeps you stuck in them. Why not do something radical like feeling them? Let the emotion wash over you and it will pass through you infinitely more gently. Feeling your feelings is always easier than resisting them, because emotions grow in proportion to our resistance to them.

3.) Express What You Feel. Unexpressed emotions are like poison trapped in the body. You do not really want to do that to yourself, do you? Let them out! The key here is safety and appropriateness. Find ways to express your emotions that are safe and mature for you and those around you.

4.) Act on Your Emotions. Again, safety and appropriateness are key. Emotions are messengers from your internal reality prompting you to take some action. Discover what each emotion wants you to do, then do it, safely. Do not delay, or your emotions will act on you.

5.) Journal. Journal thoughts, emotions, dreams and dialogues. Write letters you will not send. Mine your innards to find the truth within.

6.) Exercise. Physical activity is a great stress reducer and safe way to channel your emotions into action. Whether it's a walk or a swim, a bike ride or run, or aerobics or muscle building, it will help you constructively channel your stress into a healthy mind and body. Start slow; be consistent!

7.) Talk to a Safe Someone. Call a friend or family member; find a counselor; try a coach or spiritual director; meet with a priest, pastor or rabbi … but call someone! You do not have to bear your burdens alone unless you choose to … and why would you choose to?

8.) Use Art to Express Yourself. Paint your panic. Draw your dreams. Write poetry to express the inexpressible within you. Both verbal and nonverbal art forms can help you release what should not be trapped within you.

9.) Use Music to Match Your Mood. You can use music to match your mood and theby express it, or you can use music to alter your mood when it's critical to do so. So, if you're down and need to pump it up, try some rousing rock or Latin music. If you're hyper and need to calm down and center, try baroque, New Age or soft jazz selections. Music can be a particularly powerful way to help yourself relax into sleep or get revved up for your day.

10.) Pray or Meditate Through Your Feelings. Both prayer and meditation are powerful ways to feel and express your emotions. Practice one or the other or both daily.

The expression ‘work-life balance’ means a balanced relationship between professional and private life. Many people come to realise that, although they have succeeded brilliantly in their careers, they are very lonely at the same time.

On the one hand, the combination of business and family is regarded differently in individual cultures. In many industrial nations the typical gender roles have changed significantly in the past decades. Therefore, the established family models had to be expanded with new models.

On the other hand, ‘work-life balance’ is a very personal and individual topic.

Everybody must define and find the balance that is right for them. It is only human that we would like to achieve everything at the same time: business success, a happy family, a comfortable circle of friends, a well-trained body – perfection on all levels. However, this brings with it the danger of over-exertion. The continuous stress expresses itself through infection, mental and physical exhaustion (burnout syndrome), insomnia, tinnitus and even heart attack. If your body is giving you warning signs, you should take a serious look at your lifestyle.

How can you find and keep your personal balance? The first step is to realise where you stand in the individual areas of your life. Imagine that this star graph represents your life. Assign the rays of the star to the areas of your life that are important to you: marriage, children, friends, business life, education, income, recreation, health, hobbies.

Now go through each area and think about your current position. Assign percentages for the amount of time and effort you spend on each area and adjust the rays accordingly. Which areas are dominating? What misses out? Which areas need to be changed? Which are realistic targets?

1. It's Too Easy to Use

Since LinkedIn® exists for a number of different purposes within one's career management, it's important to nail down exactly why you are there and what you hope to achieve before each visit. Job Search The Easy Way

It's simple common sense: if most of the people you know that are looking for jobs are not finding them, then why would you take the same failing approach? You should emulate those few that seem to find the job more easily.

Years ago I heard a story about a radio station and how they rented broadcasters. Being a radio personality was a popular ambition at the time. A contact within a radio station told me they had stacks of tires delivered daily. When they had occasionally had a position to fill, they did not bother looking through the resumes – they hired someone they knew.

Today, we have zillions of people submitting their resumes on job boards. Most keep submitting and submitting with dismal results. People submit on average 40 job applications on a job board for every call they get. The people that do get called, not surprisingly, are a 'perfect fit' at least on paper. That means that whatever exact keywords the hiring manager typed were in the resumes.

Matching the Job Posting Exactly

That means you have two choices. You can submit resumes that fit exactly the keywords most likely typed for a position. This method does work, but requires a lot of individual study of the position offered.

The VERY Quick Look

You need to not only match the job posting, to pass a keyword search, but you must also pass the 3-10 second look that the recruiter will give each resume. Put all important information at the top of the first page of your resume. Keep measures of success very visible in bullets.

Connecting to the Person Hiring

Or, you can find a way to know the person hiring. Getting a referral to the hiring manager can result in a 20 times improvement in your likelihood of getting that phone call inviting you to interview.

The LinkedIn Connection

Surprisingly to most people, an applicant is 5 times more likely to be hired for a job based on a search of LinkedIn profiles than if you submit for the job on a job board.

That means your LinkedIn profile should be complete and optimized as well. Since part of the benefit of LinkedIn is the references and endorsements make sure you use these features.

In fields where it's hard to find work, consider also adding work samples in LinkedIn.

Stand Out from the Crowd

Make sure that you can clearly state why you are best for a position. Add an attention getting form of proof if possible. Certificates can help, as can recommendations, but do not limit yourself to the traditional. I've corresponded recently with a guy who printed up what looked like a flyer and used it with his resume as a cover letter. It would not work in all industries but did in his.

3 Common Employment Law Questions Answered

Sometimes employment law can be difficult to comprehend. Here are three common work place situations and their legal ramifications .

1: DISMISSAL DUE TO ILLNESS

There are three potential areas of legal exposure:

· Unfair dismissal;

· Unlawful termination; and

· Discrimination

From time to time an employee will have to leave your employment due to long term health issues. They may decide to resign or you may have to actually consider dismissing them. It is beneficial to consider as many ways possible to help them back to work – dismissal should be a last resort and could be deemed unfair if not managed properly.

If continued employment is no longer achievable because there are no reasonable adjustments that can be made, it may be fair for you to dismiss them.

The Fair Work Act 2009 states that an employee must not dismiss an employee because the employee is temporarily absent from work due to illness or injury.

The Fair Work Regulation 2009 provides that it is not a "temporary absence" if the employees absence from work extends for more than 3 months, or the total absences of the employee, within a 12 month period, have been more than 3 months. The employee still requires a valid reason to dismiss the employee, even if the employee has been absent on unpaid leave for three months or over.

We suggest you ask the employee to provide medical information on his capacity for work and what support he might need to return to work.

2: EVIDENCE OF ILLNESS

You can insist on employees providing evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person that they are entitled to sick leave, for example, a medical certificate or statutory declaration. That being said there is no specific timeframe as the timeframe required is "as soon as practicable".

For this reason you should devise a written policy that stipulates that your employees provide such information within a specific timeframe. Your policy should also specify that your employees inform their manager directly of their absence (when possible), or phone their manager within a certain timeframe to explain why they can not make it to work and when they expect to return.

3: NOTICE OF REDUNDANCY

When dismissing an employee it is necessary to give them notice. The notice commences when the employee tells the employee that they want to end the employment. If you notify them of their redundancy just before leave, the time spent on annual leave will count towards their notice period.
